In 2004, with the backing of the then Prime Minister Tony Blair, Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector Brian Paddick caused a furore, when he said that he found anarchism attractive and promptly downgraded cannabis to a Class C drug (giving young people the impression that it was harmless).
This single action unleashed evil onto the streets of London, as hundreds of children set themselves up as drug dealers, cumulating in a turf war, whereby street gangs used guns to murder other children, just because they lived in a different Post Code. Meanwhile, the Police, who had by now lost control of the streets, responded by sending out officers with sub-machine guns as routine policing, before finally withdrawing all together.
Meanwhile on the other side of society, thousands of otherwise highly educated, healthy middle-class children became hooked on cannabis, opening the gate to other so-called ‘recreational drugs’ like cocaine, heroin and ecstasy which in turn caused them to be sectioned under the Mental Health Act, in ever increasing numbers.
Then, Paddick (who had lost his job) was rewarded for his failure, by the Liberal Democrats who selected him as their preferred candidate to be the next Lord Mayor of (all places) London. I know it’s a crazy story, but that’s what happened and that’s why the film is called ‘Wired to the Moon!’
